How We Study the Bible…Now That We Don’t Use the Bible as Our Main Textbook

How We Study the Bible
We are one month into our new school year and it is going very smoothly. I now have an official high schooler (eeek!) and it hasn’t been nearly as scary as I thought- in fact, it is way better than I had imagined! I also have a 7th grader, 5th grader, and 1st grader.
I will share more about our school year in a later post, but today I wanted to share how we are handling our Bible study this year. A few years back we used the Bible as our main textbook for one year and it was an amazing experience. You can read all about it in my FREE ebook.
Now we still do an in-depth Bible study, even though the Bible is not our only textbook. We have been going through a book at a time and this year we chose to study Joshua. We have been loving it so far.
Before we start any school work, we always do our Bible study first. This is the most important subject for me to do with my children and I have committed to doing our Bible study first every day. No ifs, ands or buts ![]()
We usually start at 9:00 am and begin with reading a chapter in the book (generally…sometimes it is more or less). After we read it, we read the commentaries in my Life Application Study Bible. I also use various commetnaries that I find online. Since we have been in Joshua, this past week we have also read much about the archeology of Jericho and watched this fantastic video:
I am always blown away by our conversations during our Bible study. I have my children keep a notebook to write down important points or things they want to remember. We have learned so much these past few weeks. Most importantly I wanted my children to know that the battle of Jericho was not simply a story they learned when they were little, or a little song about the walls that came tumbling down! I wanted them to see the symbolism in the story and the spiritual meanings behind the story. I wanted them to see the truth of the story. These are where the important conversations came in. I cherish this time.
It really sets the tone for our day when we study God’s Word first. Our homeschool verse for our family this year is Romans 12:2,
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
We are being transformed by His Word. And by doing our Bible study first and making it our number one subject, we aren’t conforming to the patterns of this world. We are trusting God to lead us by learning His Word first in our day.
It has been such a blessing to study the Bible with my family. I am so grateful for our time together. It not only is teaching us so much but bringing us closer as a family each and every day.
