2 Kings Complete: Reading Through the Entire Bible as a Family

Read Through the Bible as a Family

We have finished reading through 2 Kings! 1 Chronicles here we come 🙂

This week lessons from Josiah really stood out for me. As we read through chapters 22 and 23, Josiah finds the book of the law and responds. He begins to clear the temple of all evil and idolatry.

I got so excited as I read. I could just picture him going through and cleaning house!

It reminded me so much of our day that we live in today. We as a society have so many idols and evil permeating our homes. Yet, if we have the Bible and we read it and respond to it, we will want to clean house just like Josiah!

It was an awesome picture to me, and extremely apropos at this time, as I prepare to speak next month at the Simply Living for Him Retreat. I will be sharing about this very thing. How being in the Word transforms us, and how we can get rid of idols in our lives that distract us from God.

In result, I have been digging way deeper into this passage on my own since reading it with the family. Here is a piece of a commentary from Enduring Word:

The great reformation in the days of Josiah is an example of simply going back to the word of God and seeking to base all thought and practice on what God has revealed in His word. It was an Old Testament example of the Reformation principle of sola scriptura.

b. There was no king like him: Josiah was one of the most remarkable kings of Judah, unique in the strength of his obedience and commitment. He stands as a wonderful example of what a leader can and should be.

i. There were other great kings of Judah and the united kingdom of Israel – such as David and Hezekiah. Yet one thing that made Josiah unique was his godliness in his day. He lived in a remarkably wicked time, so his godliness was remarkable against the backdrop of his times. “David was a greater but not a better man than Josiah.” (Clarke)

As I see the world around us, so filled with evil and darkness, this brings me hope.
